Night Studio: Jude Broughan

We have visited Jude Broughan in her studio in Brooklyn, where she's been working on new large scale collages and more intimate works. Looking into the cyclical nature of our existence, thinking of the eight phases of the Lunar month and her own body, the artist created an artist book "Night Swimming." Broughan paired 8 poems that had emerged from the notes she makes on the floor while in the studio with newly created stitched collages that take shape and size of her own hips. One symbol throughout is the pool as a metaphor for society and ideas around that.

Night Studio: Adler Guerrier

In late July we visited Adler Guerrier in his home in Miami. While in quarantine, he captures the awakening of the nature on his porch every day. Combined with sourced or his own textual materials, they become his quarantine diary reflecting on loss, mourning, blackness, and life.

Selected Entries:

In August Adler Guerrier completed a two-part billboard claimed for living, for love and trouble, produced by Miami Design District and For Freedoms. Installed on The Moore Building, (intersection of NE 2 Avenue and 40 Street, Miami).

A work composed of text, design, and images, assembled to configure a place of everyday Miami textures, rendered to hold an apt imaginary in support of the ranges within Black social life.

Here is a place claimed for the purpose of living, fashioned to engender love, fortified to protect its inhabitants and to withstand the spectres of trouble.

We live here.

We live informed by the poetics of immigrant culture, Caribbean tendencies, Black diasporic experience, and strengthened by the forcefulness of radical traditions that prepared us to imagine, and to claim the conditions we need to live with dignity.

Night Studio: Jaye Moon

For our next Night Studio we visited Korean born, New York based artist Jaye Moon and talked about her interest in technology, Braille and Binary codes, and the new possibilities for visual communications on their intersection. She shared with us her new works produced during the lockdown: translations of lyrics of songs of the Korean band BTS in braille and binary codes.

Night Studio: Khatia Esartia

For our third Night Studio, we are visiting Khatia Esartia in quarantine in Brooklyn and discussing amongst many topics, artist collaborations, book illustrations, ceramics practice, chacha drinking, and of course, Fluffy, a character which featured heavily in her last two solo exhibitions with our gallery, 'Ich habe meinen Regenschirm vergesse' (I have forgotten my umbrella) in 2018 and ‘Out of the Cave’ in 2019.

Night Studio: Gerben Mulder

For our second Night Studio, we visited New York based artist Gerben Mulder, who is currently self-isolating himself in Brasil. Gerben had his first show in New York in our former Chelsea space. In May of 2017 in our current project space, he organized a group show titled Nieuw Amsterdam featuring works of Dutch artists Gijs Van Lith and Bram Braam.

Over the candle-light conversation, Gerben shared with us his new small-scale series of portraits, and the recent publication devoted to his "Flower" series.
