The Future of Silence: When your tongue vanishes

2.27 - 6.28.2020

Angelica Mesiti, Jaye Moon, Jesse Chun, Ji Hye Yeom, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Lawrence Lek, Juho Lee & Juseung Lee, Woojin Kim

Curated by Yoonseo Kim

The exhibition The Future of Silence: When your tongue vanishes examines language as spoken and written, as body and mind, as the corporeal and the conceptual, and as systems and cultures. The eight artists explore the phenomena of plunder and extinction of language in the neoliberal society, the relations in understandings and misunderstandings as well as the diversity of nonverbal communications happening outside of letters.

"The Wizard of Oz" by Jaye Moon is commissioned by Nam June Paik Art Center for this exhibition and is inspired by Nam June Paik's "Electronic- Superhighway: Continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii" (1974). The artist translated in Korean Braille the excerpts from the movie used initially by Paik and recreated it into a free-standing wall piece with approximately 50,000 toy bricks (Lego, Soho Bricks). Old TV accompanying the work displays the script in Korean and English. "With my work, I expand our scope of perceiving technology and its use in art and provide a more inclusive, more universal means of communication," - says the artist.

The show can be seen by appointment, please contact curator Yoonseo Kim. T 82 (0)31-201-8553 | F 82 (0)31-201-8530 | M 82 (0)10-4780-1020
