At the heart of Carolyn Carr’s artistic journey lies an ongoing exploration of natural elements and their expressive potential. Through meticulous experiments with found materials—earth pigments, botanical dyes, and even the hues from her own makeup palette—Carr has developed a richly textured practice rooted in the transformative possibilities of color, form and materials that has been in her work since as early 1990s.
Carr’s signature emerges most clearly in her recurring use of linear motifs—delicate, overlapping marks that read as both gesture and glyph. These lines, often etched in natural pigment on raw linen, function as a kind of personal tag: a visual shorthand for presence, memory, and place. Their rhythm and spacing carve negative space into fields of color, prompting shifts in perception and inviting viewers to linger in the tension between surface and depth.
